How do you store tahini
While you might remember to do so for store-bought tahini that comes in a capped bottle or the likes, you must follow suit for homemade tahini as well. Tahini that placed uncovered in the fridge, will absorb the coolant gases and is likely to end up tasting foul. Also, the paste might harden because it will lose moisture. Keeping the tahini without covering at room temperature makes it unhygienic as dirt and dust will fall into it. Chilling tahini in a refrigerator after opening it will no doubt maximize its quality and prevent it from going bad.
However, if you plan to use the leftover tahini within a short period, then it goes without saying that refrigerating it is not mandatory. Unless you live in a very hot and humid region where the current temperatures are extremely high, you can keep tahini leftover or unopened in the pantry with other food items given that you will consume it within a week at most. The major, or rather, the only constituents of tahini or sesame seed paste are well, sesame seeds and oil can be sesame seed oil, olive oil or the likes.
Oily substances that are low in water content do not promote bacterial or fungal growth. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that you will ever find mold or any other similar parasitic organism growing on the surface or in a jar of tahini. While tahini is safe from bacterial growth, it can go rancid nonetheless. Rancidity is a type of food spoilage.
Although most food safety authorities consider it to be harmless with no health risks involved, the fact is that food that has gone rancid smells bad and tastes foul. Commercially available sesame seed pastes come with an expiration date, but many people still use it if it smells and tastes good enough.
Plus, they are still healthy as a horse despite consuming tahini that was well past the labeled date. Therefore, if you too have a long forgotten can of tahini in the pantry, then do a quick check to find if it is safe for use. If you smell a pungent or bad smell upon opening the can, throw it away immediately. Also, tahini is quite stable because it contains all the antioxidants found in sesame seeds. Those antioxidants both help the spread retain quality and stay safe to use for months.
If you want to retain the quality for as long as possible think more than a year , consider refrigerating open tahini. The only downside is that it gets a bit thicker in the fridge. I talk about the issue in detail later in the article. Unfortunately, I cannot give you an exact answer. It differs between brands, and it also depends on what quality you find good enough.
However, at least a couple of months past the printed date is a pretty safe bet. Different brands sell their tahini with different shelf lives. Some go with a relatively short one of a year or maybe 18 months , others with more extended ones like two and a half or even three years.
You need to keep in mind that the date printed on the tahini jar is a best-by date, not an expiration date. In other words, the brand informs you only how long the product is supposed to retain best quality. Because of that, you should store your homemade tahini in the fridge and use it within 4 weeks of making. Better safe than sorry. If you compare organic tahini with the processed one containing preservatives and stabilizers, the organic tahini lifespan is shorter.
Note that tahini is sensitive to the change of temperature. So if your tahini is homemade, you need to put it in a cold place. With no preservatives, it is likely to go bad quickly if not stored well. Spread it on toast: If you are looking for a balanced breakfast, look no further. Mix all the ingredients then purse them in a food processor to ensure that they combine correctly. Salad-dressing: Are you bored by balsamic dressing, you need to give the tahini-based salad a trial.
You also require lemon juice, grated ginger apple cider vinegar two spoonfuls each. After mixing the ingredients, drizzle over your greens, and then enjoy your sumptuous meal.
A double seasoned burger: You can decide to use tahini alone on your burger. If you choose to enhance it, add a little lemon juice together with smoked paprika. Spread the mixture on your burger and enjoy it.
Stir it in soup: Maybe you are used to peanut butter. The consistency of the peanut butter and that of tahini is similar. Have you ever tried to use tahini as an alternative?
