Overall a very challenging, but very worthwhile hike with amazing views once you get above the tree-line.
Route: Starts off with steady incline for about 2 miles, levels off for about 3 miles, until you get to the Barr Camp. Steady incline after that until you get above treeline at about mile 8 or about 11,ft. After that there are a bunch of switchbacks to gain elevation. Not impossible, lots of people do it, but I would just be aware that you are basically doubling the elevation gain of most 14ers.
Trail Surface and Rating: Below treeline it was all crushed gravel and awesome to walk on; all class 1. Above treeline it was still pretty much crushed gravel, with some spots where you had to step up onto a Boulder etc.
About 1 mile from the summit things got a little tougher with some small scrambles and some tougher route finding; maybe class 2 in some spots. Hydration: I would pack enough to water to get to Barr Camp, then filter water from the spring and fill up about 3 liters. Weather: It was 40ish at the parking lot, then warmed up a little in the sun above tree-line, and then it was with wind at the summit. Clothes and Equipment: I wore trail shoes, softshell pants, short sleeve shirt, hooded synthetic shirt, and a baseball cap.
Also brought a fleece, an insulated jacket, fleece cap, and gloves. I also brought a water filter, phone, phone charging stick, snacks, and med kit. This trail is a bit of a monster. I would not recommend doing this without poles if you plan to do it in one trudge. Started at 7am and achieved the summit around 3pm. Challenging Trail. I enjoyed a lot.
