Can i shoot buckshot out of a full choke
Comment Post Cancel. Jere Smith. Just do not shoot OO in a Full choke it can and often does cause a bulge in older guns. I shot a 6 point point with 00 in a full choke. Any choke you want although I think a full choke will give you the type of pattern most people want for hunting. An improved cylinder will spread them out a little in 10 yard home protection. Mod chocks! Big john. You can use full choke although modified is your best bet. I would rather use a slug if your able to. Buckshot to me is good out to 40 yards.
Right Rail 1. Those who can see shot will confirm this. You can often observe what looks like a tennis ball-sized cluster of shot moving past the bird at short range. The initial idea was to create a workhorse without regard to aesthetics that would be as forgiving to shoot as possible on normal days. It was based on an over-and-under because, though I love side-by sides, over-and-unders are usually easier to control and easier to point. The Beretta action is supremely reliable, moreover, and the Essential, though a budget gun, had livelier barrels than the average because it dispensed with side ribs.
The gun was a multi-choked model and this allowed for much experiment with shotgun chokes at the pattern plates and, later, in hides and on the shooting field.
After some months of experiment, I determined that I had the most consistent first-shot success with something called a Seminole spreader choke. This device is made in the USA. It might be described as a reverse choke: it has a section that extends from the muzzles and trumpets out to a greater size than the bore.
The form of this section is conical. The concept of reverse constriction is not new. My experience would seem to confirm this; the Seminole choke still works on clay birds 50yd out, yet it is very forgiving close in.
The second shotgun choke that worked really well in the field — in that it was effective and forgiving in use — was a standard Beretta Improved Cylinder Mobilchoke tube. This is a conventional shotgun choke with about five thou of constriction. They were not testing, but it really was quite difficult to miss with it. I have since lent it to friends in distress and they have always shot it better than other, more traditional weapons. The gun and the cartridges were lent to me in Italy.
It was extremely effective on easy birds but the experience was notable because the 36g cartridges had a lot of shot in them but did not recoil excessively the lower velocity, heavy-payload cartridge was explored by the wildfowler Dr Charles Heath years ago. Does this mean that everyone should open up their chokes?
No, not unless one is shooting at close- to mid-range birds routinely. Is a different choke better for some reason? Joined: Apr Ouachita Mtns, AR. Modified is what I've always used. I don't think full choke is dangerous, I have shot it myself. I hear lots of buck thru a full choke will ruin the bbl Joined: Feb I have done a lot of testing of large shot and Buckshot in various shotguns. In every shotgun that I have ever patterened, a standard full choke will pattern better with 4, 00, and buck without exception, all testing done at 40 yards.
I load my own buckshot with www. The pattern opens to 20" with 4 Buckshot. I hunted with 's and 's with full chokes for years, started off with modified in both versions and ithaca.
I went to the full chokes in both along with an Ithaca 10ga auto with a full choke. Joined: May Middle of SD. Beware of any old man in a profession where one usually dies young. Calm seas don't make sailors. Joined: Sep NW La. Fed Premium 1 gave the best kill counts to 75yds with an IM choke.
A good quality after market extended choke will work well. From a Rem or Win bore something in the Neighborhood of. Primos, Kicks, and Pure Gold make extended Buckshot chokes. I pattern alot of shotguns and just like rifles, they will tend to have a pet combo. Try a few combos and see what gives you the best patterns.
Look at your overall pattern on large 3'x3' sheets of paper. Ideally you will want an even pattern with no large gaps that gives a dense 20" core. Also make sure your gun is hitting POA. Some folks think a shotgun naturally shoots to the POA with the factory bead, but that's far from the truth with many guns. Large paper is very important in studying patterns.
My most rescent buckshot test were with an Mossberg The key combo was a IM ext choke and Federal Premium 3. That combo gave excellent patterns and I wouldn't be afraid to use it on small deer out to yds in calm conditions. Good Luck loder. When I checked the gun it has the old C-lect choke , I had the thing turned down to full. It did not hurt the gun at all, but I do think it affected the pattern somewhat.

Please keep the anecdotes and references to modern firearms relevant to that. That said, generally historical ML'ers were not choked, except for jug chokes to facilitate loading bore sized wads and getting good seals. Joined Dec 28, Messages Reaction score I have found that any choke larger than "improved cylinder" actually makes patterns worse with 4 through buck shot in my muzzle loading shotguns.
I pattern all my smooth bores at 35 yards. Eight, buck shot should make a 36" spread at 35 yards in a 12 gauge smoothbore if the powder charge is right. In a 12 gauge I recommend 70 to 80 grains of FFg. Some of my muzzle loading shotguns have removable choke tubes which is a big plus.
Chokes do not appear to improve patterns n buckshot loads in my experience, Plastic shot sleeves, on the other hand, actually do if loaded correctly. I cut the "gas-seal" and "cushion" section off and load over traditional over powder wad and cushion wad for best performance. You have to experiment with your shotgun to find what works best! When the seal comes up to take a pea you kick them in the icehole Last edited: May 1, Ok, then I have to ask the question; if you have a barrel that is choked similar to the way cartridge guns are today, how do you get a bore sized card or wad through the restricted muzzle relative to the chamber size?
A jug choked bore allows the bore to be parallel sided except the jug section which is wider from breech to muzzle. Batguano is "mostly" correct about historical muzzle loading shotguns not having choked barrels.
